Hollie and Jeff both say that the Prague show was an awesome James Brown concert - he was on amazing form. They said it was professionally filmed and
that fans should try to get hold of the footage somehow, but I don't know how we would do that.

about that praha gig, just a few days before the gig hollie emailed me "are you coming ? ". just a few months before that we had attended four JB
shows (paris, brussels, rotterdam and amsterdam) and in december 2006 we would be in czech for our holiday. also last minutes flights to czech were
very expensive at that moment (normally we fly for "peanuts" to czech). so we thought "well we skip this time and check out the tour next
year....".

last interview for dutch t.v.
i spoke with the lady who did the interview, she did not know what to ask (she hardly knew who JB was...) and i gave her a quick "whoisJB" and some
questions to ask (mainly about the album "world against the grain". it later turned out that she asked the usual b.s. questions...

Living In North America – James Brown at Casino Rama
Well, better late than never on this…
Last weekend, James Brown made his third Toronto-area appearance of the last 2 years. He played Casino Rama, somewhat north of the city. The show was
more than a little surreal - I’d never been to a casino, let alone see my all time favourite recording artist play one.
According to MC Danny Ray we were in Toronto, not Rama, Ontario. Sure Toronto has its urban sprawl, but a 2 ˝ hour drive through rush hour traffic and
snow goes beyond even the most generous definitions of the Greater Toronto Area.
JB’s been playing casinos since his late-60s Frank Sinatra aspirations (check out Live At The Apollo Vol 2). Of course, the funk has proven to be his
legacy and this was likely the most physically demanding show most Rama patrons are ever likely to see. And this was no Vegas funk, it’s the real
thing.
Anyone who’s seen JB since 1975, when he billed himself as ‘The Man Who Never Left’, will come out of a show thinking “he’s still got it”, even at age
72. His diction, phasing and overall lung power are still there, he’s light on his feet and has more skill with mic stand acrobatics than David Lee
Roth and Prince put together.
His fashion sense is still… his own. His emerald green tux reminded me of an Andy Williams Christmas special I saw last month, right down to the
booties. By the second song, he was already sweating hard. My wife Sarah remarked that “does the show end when his sweat stains meet in the middle of
his shirt?”. This turned out to be a pretty good estimate.
The current band is the Soul Generals, and featured 2 drummers, bass, tenor sax/trumpet/alto sax, a Neil Peart sized percussion array, and remarkably,
4 guitarists. Sometimes all the guitarists played in unison, but “Doing It To Death” delivered at least 3 interlocking parts that pushed it into King
Sunny Ade territory. The Soul Gs don’t sport any stars from back in the day, but lead hornsman Jeff Watkins was very good, adapting Maceo’s style with
some interesting harmonic choices. James isn’t singing as much as he used to, so Watkins got a lot of minutes off the bench.. He doesn’t insist on
being the multi-instrumentalist of years past, but took a few turns on a thin-sounding Hammond patch on what appeared to be a Yamaha DX7. If this were
a funk nouveau band like something in the Daptone orbit, you know there’d be a real Hammond bound in rich Corinthian leather on stage. But this was
just one of the many touches that proved he’ll never answer to analog fetishists who would rather see him impersonate his peak period of the 60s and
early 70s.. Debris from every decade since the 50s swept up into the James Brown revue, from dance routines to astrology references to 80s-vintage
equipment. The pacing is still a huge factor. Would a contemporary funk band stop the show cold for a moment of silence in honour of Lou Rawls? Would
there be extended (admittedly less compelling than decades past) jazz and blues setpieces to vary the tempo? All the gear-shifting by the band and
backing vocalists made the funk hit harder.
Casino Rama’s entertainment facility is very well appointed, and the mix, sightlines and psychoactive light show contributed favorably to the overall
vibe. JB gutted it out for almost an hour and a half, although there was no encore. We were left to contemplate this ad-lib from “Living in America”:
“Canada, the United States, you know, it’s all America – North America!” Sir John A. is doing the boogaloo in his grave.
and:
Casino Rama, Ontario - January 6, 2006
Soul good!
RAMA, Ont. - If clothes make the man, then James Brown was definitely a made man last night at Casino Rama during the first of two shows.
The Godfather of Soul, making his first Toronto-area appearance since undergoing prostate cancer surgery in December 2004, was decked out in a
glorious forest green suit, trimmed in sparkling silver sequins, with a matching green shirt and green boots. It was as if the Jolly Green Giant
suddenly got funky as Brown fluidly moved around the stage in his high-riding dress pants while shouting out phrases like "Snow Peas! Candied Yams!"
But the No. 1 Soul Brother, whose big pompadour hairstyle, also a thing of beauty, wasn't just about style.
After a good, if not great, performance at Massey Hall in November 2004, the 72-year-old Brown was back in fighting form last night, both in terms of
his vocal shrieks and trademark slippery dance moves. No song more than an extended, jam-happy version of This Is A Man's World, which came towards
the end of Brown's hour-and-20-minute performance, clearly demonstrated The Funky President had indeed returned to office.
Taking off his bow tie and throwing it to a woman in the front row and blowing her a kiss, The Hardest Working Man In Show Business would later get
down on one knee and trade verses with each of his four female vocalists known as Bittersweet, who were dressed in black evening gowns with go-go
tassels.
"Can I scream?!" he begged each and every one individually.
Backed by the super-tight 11-piece uniform-wearing Soul Generals, including one of his sons on guitar, two scantily clad female dancers/gymnasts/
rappers and a male backup singer, there was definitely strength in numbers.
Whenever Mr. Please Please retreated to the back of the stage to play keyboards, one of his band members -- notably sax player Jeff Watkins, who Brown
referred to as "the ninth wonder of the world" -- capably took over.
This was an old school soul revue all the way, complete with four disco balls overhead, and the audience couldn't get enough of it.
Brown even asked for 30 seconds of silence for singer Lou Rawls, who died yesterday, before seguing into a tribute to Ray Charles with a cover of
Nighttime (Is The Right Time) with big, ballsy vocal accompaniment from one of the Bittersweet singers.
Opening the evening with Make It Funky, Get Up Offa That Thing, and Going To Have A Funky Good Time, Brown came out swinging.
"You will not be able to relax because the funk will make you move!" he said prophetically.
Sure, Brown snuck in the odd ballad like Prisoner Of Love and Try Me or an instrumental, but it was shoulder-shaking, toe-tapping, hip-wiggling
numbers like Get On The Good Foot, Living In America, I'm Superbad, I Feel Good, and the show ending Get Up (I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine) that
proved to be the real crowd pleasers.
picture was made after one of the gigs at the casino (jb and drew marshall)

11/02/2006: brisbane, australia, good vibrations festival, riverstage:
the Godfather of Soul.
Where do I start? Those who witnessed James Brown will know what I’m talking about, this performance for me was ‘more than words’. Wow. The atmosphere
of the Music Bowl was amazing, everyone had congregated to witness this legend and you could feel the anticipation in the air. The stage was set up
with instruments galore for his talented band the Soul Generals. On walked the Soul Generals all suited up in snazzy tail suits, and they had a quick
jam to warm up the crowd. Then onto the stage walk 4 Soul Mama back up singers, oooh wee, these mature ladies strutted on stage beautifully with
routines to match. From memory the band consisted of a 3 horn section, huge percussion and drum set up, bass, guitar and keys. Finally James Brown
walked on stage kitted out in an amazing red suit and gleaming red shoes, the crowd went crazy and myself was in shock to simply see this legend live.
Kicking into some funky beats I don’t think there was a body in the vicinity that wasn’t moving, Mr Brown dropped classics such as I Feel Good and
finished off with Sex Machine.
No doubt that this legend is getting on in age and vocally didn’t do a lot, just throwing us key lines from his tracks. He interacted with his band so
well, they were as much a part of the show as him. James randomly danced with the back up singers and pulled up members of the band to the mic for a
jam. His horn section had spot on routines marching back and forth on the spot and boogying to the music. The Soul Mama’s were incredible, they had
such powerful voices and smick dance routines that had everyone smiling. The whole show was personality plus. The only downside for me was the 2
younger dancers that joined the stage, they were great dancers and all but I really didn’t see a need for them to be there, James Brown is a legend
and doesn’t need nightclub dancers to improve his show. Anyways I got over that and was just mesmerized to see James Brown. Many walked away in awe
after witnessing a funkdified soul filled performance and I feel privileged to have been able to witness such a legend.

Live reviews of James Brown:
» James Brown - Derwent Entertainment Centre, Tas - February 14, 2006
What better way to spend the international day of love than with a bona fide, gen-u-ine sex machine? Such was the opinion when 2100 Hobartians took
the stellar opportunity of spending the night with the one, the only Mr. James Brown.
Opening proceedings for the evening was the amazing Ash Grunwald. Proving that one person is more than enough to entrance a crowd, Grunwald gave a
stellar performance. Punctuating his blues-streaked set with crowd favourites such as ‘Dolphin Song’, the lad managed to channel Howling Wolf himself
with his rousing rendition of ‘Smokestack Lightning’, which, in short, had me staring carp-mouthed with incredulity. Never before had I seen an
opening act take such command of the crowd, and most certainly I had never before seen a solo performer with such passion and tenacity as I saw
tonight. I heartily recommend to one and all, if you get the chance to see Ash Grunwald, do yourself a favour and be first in line for tickets.
The crowd, having been whipped into a shamanistic frenzy by Mr. Grunwald, were primed ready and champing at the collective bit for the headliner; the
one, the only, Mr. James Brown.
Backed by a seventeen piece, colour co-ordinated and all together grooving, band, Mr. Brown not only delivered all the groove juice to get you going
on such an evening but gave all the shimmy and shaking that was ever required to get one on up and get on down. UUUUUNNNGGHHH!
At over seventy you would think that retirement would be the sole option for any seasoned performer; but not Mr. Brown. From the moment Mr. Brown
strode on stage bedecked in a red suit (with tassels, of course) he owned the venue. When Mr. Brown told those in seats to stand, they stood, for when
Mr. Brown asks you to do something; you do it.
From the opening chord the crowd were getting their collective freak on. From general admission to the seats, one and all were losing themselves in
the primal ballet that is funk. And when it comes to funk, soul brothers and sisters, they don’t come any better.
Musically, the band was flawless, hitting each note with bone-crunching precision and mind-altering alacrity. The set comprised all the hits one would
expect, (and frankly one would have been disappointed without hearing) finishing with ‘I Feel Good’ and the orgiastic anthem of the evening ‘Sex
Machine’.
Say what you will about Mr. Brown’s private life and off stage persona. The truth of the matter is the man has the power to move a crowd to the point
of shaking their asses to shattering point and back again. It is also important to note that, the man has been doing it for fifty odd years now, which
is more than just about any living performer can claim. I am sure that if you were there that night you are nodding in agreement right now, and if you
weren’t well, you missed out on the performance of a lifetime, and you better pray really hard that you don’t miss such an opportunity again…
UUUUNNNGGGHH!

"Confidant, cabbie and fly-on-the-wall - this is one profession that is by no means run-of-the-mill.
'The first thing James Brown's bodyguard did when he met me at the airport was give me a big bag," says Paul Edwards, a limo driver in Perth.
"It was about three or four feet long, big and bulky, like a cricket bag, and it rattled, as if it was full of Meccano. The bodyguard looked at me and
said: 'Take special care of this bag. It's very important to Mr Brown. Make sure it goes straight up to his room when you get to the hotel."'
Edwards did what he was told. The minute he arrived at the hotel, he took the bag up to the concierge and said, "Don't lose this bag, it must go
straight up to Mr Brown's room."
Only after several days of driving Brown around Perth did Edwards finally pluck up the courage to ask the bodyguard what was in the bag? "It's Mr
Brown's hairdryer. He takes it with him everywhere.""

22/02/2006 :
SHANGHAI, China — The city: Shanghai. The venue: a drafty People's Liberation Army acrobatics theater. The event: James Brown.
The 72-year-old Godfather of Soul made his mainland China debut Wednesday, belting out classics such as "Get up Offa That Thing" before a capacity
crowd.
"We are going to funk you up before we finish," Brown said three songs into his set, which he kicked off with "Make it Funky."
Dressed in a cherry red satin suit, he shimmied, shook and leapt — although not quite as high as he once did.
Behind him, the nine-piece Soul General, complete with gold epaulets on their suits, put on a virtuoso display of rhythm and horns. His quartet of
backup singers, the General Sweet, egged on the cheering, clapping crowd that filled the Yunfeng Theater in the heart of Shanghai's once-thriving
nightclub district.
Brown is little known in China, and Wednesday's audience was overwhelmingly European, American and Japanese — evidence of Shanghai's increasingly
international, cosmopolitan complexion.
In an interview with The Associated Press last year, Brown shrugged off talk of retirement and said his work is the root of much of today's music.
"Retire for what? What would I do? I made my name as a person that is helping. I'm like Moses in the music business," he said.
